About Us

The Daily Star, based in Oneonta, is a daily morning newspaper that circulates in a four-county area in central New York state.

The Daily Star publishes in print Tuesday through Saturday, with updates daily on its website. It has an audience of 19,000 readers in print and reaches an average of 200,000 monthly users at thedailystar.com . Additionally the Daily Star publishes two weekly newspapers, The Cooperstown Crier and The Weekly Star; a seasonal magazine, Upstate Life; an online entertainment guide, The Scene; and numerous specialty sections throughout the year.

The Greater Oneonta area is found in the northwestern section of the Catskill Mountains in the Susquehanna River valley, approximately midway between Albany and Binghamton.

Tourism, education and health care are important sectors of the region's economy. People come to the region to enjoy The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, and numerous summer baseball camps in a 25-mile radius of Oneonta. Throughout the year visitors also enjoy numerous museums, arts organizations, recreational opportunities and dining across the four-county region. Students earn degrees at Hartwick College, The State University College at Oneonta, and other state universities at Delhi, Cobleskill and Morrisville. One of the region's largest employers, Bassett Healthcare, is based in Cooperstown, and includes the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

The Daily Star is owned by CNHI LLC, a parent company for daily, weekly and semi-weekly newspapers published in more than 200 communities throughout the United States.

History of The Daily Star

On June 19, 1890, Harry W. Lee published the first edition of what was originally called The Oneonta Star, saying it would be an independent morning newspaper “devoted to the interests of Oneonta and the Susquehanna Valley.”

The name of the newspaper was changed to The Daily Star with the Monday, May 27, 1974 edition. As explained by then-publisher Donald J. Clifford, fewer than one fourth of The Daily Star editions were sold in the city, and the newspaper had become more of a regional publication.

With either name, The Daily Star has remained steadfast to its mission. We deliver to the people of the four-county area significant news affecting their daily lives. We feature in-depth news reports of key local and regional issues; stories on regional business trends; complete sports coverage; specialty reports on schools, health and higher education; and lifestyle reports chronicling area entertainment events and local social events.

In short, we report on aspects of hometown life important to our readers while providing merchants large and small with an efficient vehicle to promote their goods and services.

Only The Daily Star and Cooperstown Crier can provide the reach and response in our market area. This is why our newspapers, websites and other products are the preferred media for advertisers in reaching our market.
