Sitting in Gan Ha'Shishim, with tinkling water in the background, fat goldfish sunbathing in the warm ponds, darting between the lotus flowers. The rustle of the wind and the hot sun made the wine even more refreshing and the cheeses more tasty. Another shluk of wine, another slither of cheese. We polished off the bottle with ease....and the cheese. We were sitting at Kibbutz Be'eri with winemaker cheesemaker, Tom Carbone in an area of great beauty and tranquility. Yet we were surrounded by memories and evidence of death, slaughter, grief and memories from the Simchat Torah Massacre on 7th October. 100 people murdered and over 25 people kidnapped and kept as hostages. From one kibbutz. Tom has a mission and a dream. A mission to continue the dairy in honor of Dror Or z"l, chef and cheesemaker, murdered on 7.10; and a dream to plant a vineyard and build a winery at Be'eri to strengthen the recovery of thisbrave kibbutz. This Be'eri Chardonnay 2023 was the first wine on the journey and it was delicious. Already sold out.We arrived hesitant, embarrassed, not sure where to look and what to say. We left strengthened by this young man's spirit and vision. May the wine bring light and banish the darkness.

Today it was my privilege to meet Ido Tamir of the Tamir Family Farm. He produces the Ptora Olive Oils that the leading chefs use and is doing Israel proud in the competitions they are winning worldwide.Midnight Ultra Premium Olive Oil is a unique, special edition expression of the olive oil maker's art. This handcrafted, artisan prestige olive oil was grown by the family and harvested, pressed and produced at nighttime. A wonderful expression of one of the most exclusive Israeli olive oils ever produced. Wow - liquid gold. Now to work on the article!

These are Fck U wines. Wines produced from amidst carnage, misery and destruction. Wines that show life goes on. Wines that illustrate you can rape, pillage, burn, destroy and slaughter, but life is stronger than death.Wine is a symbol of life. It is a bedrock of the Judeo Christian religions and a signal of Western Civilization.Hamas, Hezbollah and ISIS have something in common. They are anti-liberalism, anti-democracy, anti-the West; They are also anti-alcohol and anti-wine. These wines, Be'eri Chardonnay and Nir Oz Red, were produced by communities in the north western Negev. The same desert which Israel has made bloom with a drive and technology that has impressed the world.Kibbutzim Be'eri and Nir Oz were devastated by the 21st century pogrom inflicted by the uncivilized Hamas. These wines show even after an appalling winter, the flowers will show themselves in the spring. Wines of defiance. LecHaim! To Life!

An extract from my book "Golan Heights Winery" is featured here. The book was written in honor of the winery's 40th year anniversary. The Hebrew version was published last year, now the English version is out.

Wild wines from unfashionable, unconventional grape varieties. I meet Oblass wines made by an Israeli winemaker in Piedmont and Puglia.

Life is stronger than death and wine is a symbol of life. Wine lover and winemaker Gidon Fauker z"l, was cruelly and brutally murdered in cold blood on October 7th. His partners in the wine venture were Gadi Moses, Haim Peri and Yoram Metzger. They were kidnapped on that black day and are still being held captive. Hamas, the wine hating fundamentalist terrorists, were responsible for the Simchat Torah slaughter and the kidnapping. Now there is a new birth at Kibbutz Nir Oz in the Western Negev. The wine...the dream of Gidon and his friends, has been bottled. Members of the kibbutz rallied round to help. The person who saved the wine and brought us to this moving day was Haim Gan of Ish Anavim. He has done holy work. Nir Oz Winery is alive! Le'haim! To Life!If Gidon Fauker is looking down on us, I believe he will have a smile on his face. May his memory be a blessing. As for the hostages, bring them home today! Your wine awaits you.

Visited one of my favorite restaurants tonight, Ouzeria. Hidden in a back street behind the throbbing Levinsky Market in Tel Aviv. The menu was full of attractive choices which were enticing. It was hard to decide. All the courses we chose were above expectation. They were on small plates, innovative, incredibly tasty, with a twist, but without being in the least bit pretentious. We started with Sherry and ended with Madeira. You can't do that in many places here. How I miss them (what do you expect from a Brit) and I love them both. We had three glasses of white wines, each good examples of the new style of Israeli white. Less on the nose, more on the palate and texture. Less tropical, more minerally. The wines were Shvo Vineyards Chenin Blanc from the Upper Galilee; Agur Blanc (mainly Sauvignon Blanc with three other varieties) from the Judean Hills; and Ahat Roussanne Viognier, respectively from the Upper Galilee and Judean Hills. It is time to celebrate the new quality of Israeli whites. Chapeau to winemakers Gaby Sadan (Shvo), Eyal Drory (Agur) and Nitzan Swersky (Ahat.)
