About the grading systems

The passing grade for a subject is 10. It is usually said that in France “20 is for God, 19 is for the King and 18 is for the President, so 17 is the maximum grade a student can attain”… In practice, grades higher than 15 are very seldom awarded and 14 is considered very good.

The first stage, the collège, is composed of four years of study, for students ages eleven through fifteen (similar to a US middle school).

School routine

Generally speaking, the school day in France is from 8:30 until 4:30, but it varies depending on which area you live in. This is longer than the typical school day in the UK or America, but there is a longer lunch break and two other breaks during the day. There are 24 hours of lessons a week.

In France, children attend primary school (école élémentaire) from the age of six to 11, and must complete five years of study: CP (Cours préparatoire) – ages six to seven. CE1 (Cours élémentaire 1) – ages seven to eight. CE2 (Cours élémentaire 2) – ages eight to nine.

All employees are entitled to paid leave of 2.5 days for each month of actual work. This gives 5 full weeks, resulting in 25 days annually. Nota Bene: By French calculation, this is actually 30 days of vacation, because Saturday is considered a working day in this calculation.

What we call "college" or "university" in English is l'université or la faculté in French. Some formal education is compulsory until the end of junior high, although several solutions are possible if a student wants to enter an apprenticeship.
