The Los Angeles Sparks' playoff drought continues, but a glimmer of hope might be closer than you think. Despite boasting a roster packed with talent – think Kelsey Plum, Dearica Hamby, Rickea Jackson, Azura Stevens, and Cameron Brink – the Sparks missed the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season, finishing a disappointing ninth. They were just two games shy of the Golden State Valkyries and a coveted playoff spot. But here's where it gets interesting...
Despite the setback, there's a sense that the Sparks are building something special. Both Plum and Hamby expressed optimism after the season, suggesting they'd return in free agency. If the Sparks can retain these key players, they'll have a solid foundation for a playoff push.
However, the team still needs some work. While the Sparks were offensively strong, especially in the latter part of the season, their defense was a major letdown. Only the Chicago Sky, Dallas Wings, and Connecticut Sun had worse defensive ratings. This is where the Sparks need to focus: improving their defense. This will likely involve acquiring top-tier defensive players during the offseason and emphasizing better defensive strategies during games.
And this is the part most people miss... The Sparks might not have to look far to find a defensive game-changer and a potential key to a playoff appearance. The answer could lie with Cameron Brink.
Cameron Brink's Impact: A Season Cut Short
Cameron Brink's rookie season was unfortunately cut short. After being selected as the second overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, she tore her ACL just fifteen games in. The recovery process extended into the 2025 season. Brink finally returned in late July, playing a total of nineteen games.
Those nineteen games, however, don't fully reflect Brink's true potential. Coming off the bench, she averaged only 12.8 points. While she immediately made a defensive impact, her offensive output and playing time were limited.
Brink's Breakout Year: What to Expect
Next season could be the year fans see the real Cameron Brink. In 2024, she barely had a chance to adjust to the WNBA, and this past season was dedicated to recovering from a serious injury. By the time the next season rolls around, Brink will have had time to hone her skills and get into peak physical condition.
Brink will be playing in Unrivaled during the offseason. While she was on a roster last season, she didn't get to play. This winter will be her first Unrivaled season, which should prepare her well for the next WNBA campaign. Azura Stevens credits Unrivaled with significantly improving her offensive game. Hopefully, Brink will experience a similar boost.
With her size, rim protection skills, and ability to shoot from beyond the arc, Brink is a thrilling 3-on-3 prospect. She was originally slated to be part of the 3x3 team for the Olympics but had to withdraw due to her injury.
What do you think? Will Cameron Brink be the key to the Sparks' playoff success? Do you agree that defense is their biggest area of concern? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
