Honorary Professor

Honorary Professors should be of equivalent national/international standing in their field to substantive University Professors.

The title is awarded to an individual who is making a significant and regular contribution to activities of the University at a level deemed equivalent to that of a Professor in an honorary capacity, when assessed against the criteria at this level, and following the consideration of external referees’ reports. Individuals must be academically qualified for the status proposed (normally including a higher degree MD/PhD). Individuals will normally have been collaborating with the University of Leicester for a minimum of twelve months prior to the application.

A clinician wishing to be considered for the title of Honorary Professor will normally be expected to hold a consultant or principal/lead GP post, or have comparable work experience in a clinical setting.Candidates will be assessed on a number of different criteria which will not be limited to just research and/or teaching activities. Factors which will be considered will include:

  • Outstanding professional achievement
  • Recognition as a leading expert within their profession or occupation
  • Entrepreneurial activity
  • Unique contribution in their area of expertise
  • Individuals must be academically qualified for the status proposed (normally including a higher degree MD/PhD), and be a leading authority in their subject area, with a growing national/international standing in their field to equivalent to a substantive University Professor.

Honorary Associate Professor

Please note that conferment of the title of Honorary Associate Professor does not enable title holders to be addressed as Professor, which is permitted only for those holding full professorial status.

The Honorary Associate Professor title is awarded to an individual who is making a significant and regular contribution to activities of the University at a level deemed equivalent to that of an Associate Professor in an honorary capacity, when assessed against the criteria at this level, and following the consideration of external assessors' reports.

Individuals must be academically qualified for the status proposed (normally including a higher degree MD/PhD), and be a leading authority in their subject area, with a growing national/international standing in their field to equivalent to a substantive University Associate Professor.

Individuals will normally have been collaborating with the University of Leicester for a minimum of twelve months prior to the application.

Clinicians wishing to be considered for the title of Honorary Associate Professor will normally be expected to hold a consultant or principal/lead GP post, or have comparable work experience in a clinical setting.

Honorary Senior Lecturer

This title is awarded when a significant and regular teaching and/or research contribution is being made to the University on an unpaid basis.

It is normally expected that the individual will hold a higher degree (MD or PhD) and normally have been collaborating with the University of Leicester for a minimum of 12 months.

For teaching an honorary title may be sought on the basis of excellent performance in teaching and/or the leadership and management of teaching.

Clinicians wishing to be considered for the title or Honorary Senior Lecturer will normally be expected to hold a consultant or principal/lead GP post, or have comparable work experience in a clinical setting.

Honorary Lecturer

This title is conferred when a significant, regular teaching and/or research contribution is being made to the University on an unpaid basis.

They will normally, but not necessarily hold a higher degree (MD or PhD).

Honorary Fellow

This title may be conferred on an individual who contributes to research, teaching, management/leadership often under the supervision of a member of the academic staff of the University.
