Phishing Scam Alert: Crypto Wallet b3hodlr.eth Loses $1.26 Million in wstETH A phishing attack recently compromised the crypto wallet b3hodlr.eth, resulting in the loss of approximately 356.7 Wrapped Liquid Staked ETH (wstETH), worth around $1.26 million. This incident underscores the persistent threat of phishing scams in the crypto community.🔍 Phishing Scams: A Growing ThreatPeckShield, a blockchain security firm, highlighted this attack. The wallet b3hodlr.eth was targeted by a phishing scheme orchestrated by Fake_Phishing187019. Additionally, another wallet, 0xff49, fell victim to the Pink Drainer phishing group, losing 562.4 Staked ETH (stETH) valued at $1.66 million.📊 Rising NumbersAccording to Scam Sniffer, phishing scams resulted in losses of $173 million in the first quarter of 2024 alone. March saw a significant increase, with $71 million stolen—a 50% rise from February. Phishing activities on the BNB and Base chains surged, with stolen funds on the Base chain increasing by 300% compared to the previous month.🔄 Phishing as a BusinessThese malicious groups operate like businesses. When one drainer group exits, another quickly replaces it. For instance, Angel Drainer emerged as Inferno Drainer exited. 🚨 Major Crypto Scam Alert: User Loses $69.3M in Address Poisoning Attack In a shocking incident on May 3, a crypto user fell victim to an address poisoning scam, losing an astounding $69.3 million in wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC). The theft, involving 1,155 WBTC, was confirmed by blockchain security provider CertiK.The attack began innocuously with the scammer mimicking a small 0.05 Ethereum (ETH) transfer. Once trust was established, the scammer executed the heist in the subsequent transaction. This method, known as address poisoning, involves creating a wallet address that closely resembles the victim's, typically by matching the first and last few characters.On-chain investigator ZachXBT and crypto security firm Cyvers also verified the incident. Meir Dolev, CTO of Cyvers, remarked that this case represents "probably the highest value lost due to an address poisoning scam" to date.Address poisoning scams exploit the length and complexity of wallet addresses, which can exceed 40 alphanumeric characters, making it easy for users to overlook slight differences. This case is a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in verifying wallet addresses.The magnitude of this scam has already surpassed the total losses from all crypto exploits and scams in the previous month, which amounted to about $25.7 million.
