The subconscious, protection and being our true selves. (2024)

So you've heard of the subconscious, have a vague idea of what it is and what it does, but you want to know how on earth it could ever protect us.

Well first let's figure out what the subconscious actually is.

Have a look at where you are right now, you're reading this but what's the weather like where you are? Is it warm, cold? Are you thinking about what you're doing later, what to watch on TV? What to buy from the shop for dinner?

The answer to those questions are formed in the conscious mind. Your current awareness, what you observe, feel and think in the present moment.

If I were to ask you about a time you felt sad or anxious about something you would be able to take your conscious mind back to a memory of when that was. You could access the feelings and thoughts you had at that time, how you behaved, what you and anyone else did at that time and I'm betting some of you will wonder if this event has had an impact on how you are today.

These memories are not constantly at the forefront of our mind, but we can easily think back to them and generally remember things that happen.

This is what our subconscious does. It stores everything we have ever done, seen, experienced and thought about without us even realising. Think of it as THE ultimate filing system - everything that happens to us, even those things we can't remember, is neatly filed away and never overwritten. It is always there. We just have to tap into it.

95% of our world - behaviour, feelings, opinions and belief systems are landscaped and meticulously designed by our subconscious. We experience something and every aspect of what we thought, felt and concluded from that experience is labelled, filed and plays out again and again the background of our lives.

This filing system is a perfect blueprint of safety and comfort. It keeps us from harm and it's the ultimate in survival superpowers.

But ....

Have you ever had to speak in public and had a complete mind block? Stumbled over your words? Said something that came out wrong, not at all in the way you intended?

Chances are you've had an experience in the past where you've spoken out, maybe in front of people you don't know and been humiliated in some way. Alternatively, someone with authority in your life (such as your parents) have told you not to speak to certain people, or asked you to be quiet and it didn't feel good at the time. You can't speak clearly in this example because your subconscious mind is stepping in to keep you 'safe' from the negative feelings you've experienced in the past.

It might have done a quick file check and found one marked 'Don't talk to strangers!' sealed with love and kisses from your Mum and Dad. It locates the sheet that tells you all about the unspeakable danger you place yourself in when, as a child, you speak to someone you don't know. It explains in grisly detail how dangerous it is to speak to anyone you don't know well. How much risk you're putting your personal safety in. How you could be taken away forever if you do! Strangers are to be feared and avoided at all costs.

So your subconscious gives you a heads up and says:

'Woooaaahhh! We're not letting that happen! If you speak here you'll be thrown in a van and carted off by some bad bad people. You'll be in so much danger if you do this. You can't, I won't let you. You cannot speak in front of these people. It's definitely not safe.'

Maybe you try anyway. Your hands get sweaty, you're shaking, even your body is working against you. Your subconscious is pulling out all the stops here.

It just wants to keep you safe. It's 'protecting' you.

Can this change?

Now we know what it is and what it does, how can we change it? And why would we want to?

Have a think about the things you want to do, but somehow there is something stopping you. Maybe you want to pitch a business idea but the very thought terrifies you. Maybe you've dreamed of visiting another country but you're afraid of flying? Perhaps driving somewhere new just fills you with dread. Or you get anxious in crowds so avoid certain social situations.

Now have a think about how it would feel to do these things without a second thought. To go on that drive to that event and pitch your amazing business from which you're flown - with no worries whatsoever - to a country you've never visited for a trip you've only ever dreamed of. How would you feel doing those things? Good?

Earlier I said you're subconscious filing system is never overwritten. That's not strictly true. You see, limiting beliefs originate from a negative experience that our subconscious very kindly remembers for us. Remember, it keeps us safe, at all costs! But if the emotional charge around that negative experience is changed to a positive one, our subconscious no longer recognises fear or feeling unsafe from that experience. Emotionally, it feels good so your subconscious is no longer on high alert when you come across something similar.

Your reality is changed. The files you have stored away for your subconscious to access are totally transformed. And the things that you once feared are things you can now easily do.

I specialise in helping others transform their lives in this way. There is a process, backed by science, that rewrites your subconscious filing system. It is rapid, highly effective and you can access it here.

I have a new influx of clients and room for a handful more. If you arrive with me through LinkedIn there are some awesome freebies and discounts, so please register here and share share share!

I've uncovered and transformed limiting beliefs around public speaking, driving, travel, relationships, parenting, confidence and self sabotage to name but a few.

When we have limits, we're not aligning to our true selves and being real is what it's all about right?
