Wellsville is known for being the junction of many foothill streams including Dyke's Creek feeding the Genesee River from the east. The water from Hurricane Agnes in 1972 exceeded the capacity and banks of Dyke's Creek, producing a rapid and huge pool of water at the center of the village.

What is the history of Phelps NY? ›

The town was part of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. The region was first settled around 1788. The town was formed in 1796 and was formerly known as "Sullivan." The town of Phelps is named after one of the original proprietors. The community was incorporated in 1855.

Olean's most celebrated industry was petroleum production. Oil was first discovered in North America in 1627, only 12 miles north of the city.

The village of Wurtsboro is itself named after the Wurts brothers who owned vast amounts of coal-rich land in Pennsylvania and helped to develop the D&H canal idea. The venture was to move the anthracite coal, which burns hotter and cleaner than any other coal, to fuel New York City.

It is historically associated with Italian-American culture and history, and in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was the heart of Manhattan's Little Italy. The street was listed on maps of the area since at least 1755.
