Which Language Has Most Words - Richest Languages - (2024)

The issue of which language has the most words is a difficult one to answer. Even linguists are attempting to avoid it. Besides its simplicity, this is not a simple query, and trying to answer it isn’t easy.

The actual number of words in each of the world’s languages is unknown. Some claim that English has the most words. Simultaneously, others argue that the number of words in specific Semitic languages, such as Arabic, is in the millions.

Which Language Has More Words? English:

English is a common foreign language in many countries. It’s also a language that has absorbed thousands of words from other languages. It allows native English speakers to use different words.

This is believed due to Viking and Norman invasions of England. And colonialism besides waves of the invention. That added several foreign words to the English lexicon. New words are introduced every day to English, which is now the lingua franca in our global community.

Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is the longest word in the English language (45 letters).

Korean:

As per this Wikipedia article:

The largest Korean dictionary contains 1,100,373 words. Which appears to be an official government-approved source.

This is the single-largest number of words in any dictionary for any language. It’s about twice as many as English, which has 505,000 words in its most comprehensive dictionary.

Even that seems to be a crazy amount. This article states that this figure includes North Korean and South Korean words. And I believe that it includes all dialects in both areas, which helps clarify some of it.

Arabic:

Three, four, or five letter roots create the Arabic alphabet. These roots can be defined in a variety of ways. You might come up with many words if you counted each word as a separate. (Even though native speakers do not use all of them).

Many people are usually unaware that a large number of words originate in Arabic. And often found in Latin, Spanish, Greek, German before finding their way into English.

As a result, some people consider Arabic to be the “mother of all languages.”

German:

If compound words are included, the German language contains over 300,000 words. As a result, German speakers could arguably make many more words as they like.

Finnish:

Finnish, as an agglutinative language, can produce an infinite number of words.

You will not, however, find such a comprehensive dictionary.

Japanese:

Another widely backed competitor is Japanese, which has a whopping 500,00 words. However, half of these are in Kanji (Chinese characters).

You could manage a daily paper with about 1200 Kanji words.

Is it possible to use dictionaries to evaluate which language has the most words?

No, it is not possible to use dictionaries to evaluate which language has the most words. Dictionaries will never be able to include every word in a language. The Duden, for example, lacks entries for compound words, which are common among German speakers.

English is one of the most populous languages in terms of dictionary entries. The Oxford English contains over 200,000 words, with 171,476 active words and 47,156 inactive words.

According to the dictionary Larousse, French has a vocabulary of 59,000 words.

The dictionary Littré has 132,000 active words. Which is more than double the number of Larousse entries.

These dictionaries are exclusive to a single nation’s words even though the French language goes well beyond France’s borders.

The Duden dictionary contains approximately 145,000 German words.

Around 88,000 words are mentioned in the Diccionario de la Real Academia Espaola.

Is it true, however, that a dictionary contains every word in a language? Most dictionaries, for example, do not include slang terms.

What’s the meaning of a word?

Counting the number of words in a language requires more than a dictionary. But where do you start when attempting to count the words in a language? It’s not been easy to define a word because so many people have different ideas of what constitutes a word.

Two or more words make up compound words. They have similar-sounding words that are listed as one or two words.

It might make sense to count each compound noun as a word in German. Is this, however, true in other languages? (Think of the English term “up-to-date.”)

In comparison to English, some languages, such as Spanish, use several inflections. Can the words “speak,” “talks,” and “talked” be counted as separate words, for example? What about the words “hablo,” “hablas,” “habla,” and “hablan”?

There is debate about whether words with multiple meanings and types should be counted as multiple words.

So let’s not neglect agglutinative languages such as Finnish or Turkish. When combining prefixes and suffixes, agglutinative languages generate new words. In other words, they can be mixed in an unlimited number of ways, much like German.

Chinese and Japanese are two examples of languages that rely on characters to convey meaning. When various characters are combined, new meanings emerge.

What is the language with the fewest words?

Regardless of how much you argue over which language has the most vocabulary, each of these languages is complex in its own way. But what about the language with the smallest vocabulary?

Toki Pona is the smallest language on the planet. It is only 123 words long and was developed by a linguist. Surprisingly, this does not rule out the possibility of using it to express almost anything.

Final Thoughts;

The English language is believed to have more words than any other language in the world. But this isn’t easy to prove.

Since some languages, such as Chinese, are non-alphabetic, evaluating the number of words is difficult.

The size of dictionaries is one tool that has been used to evaluate which language has the most words. And it works for the major European languages.

So, it doesn’t really matter in the end. You’ll have a broad vocabulary to deal with. Whether you’re translating or interpreting in Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or another language.
