Can an 80 year old man impregnate a woman?
We've all heard about men in their 80s and 90s fathering children, but this is rare. A father's age also affects the chance of a couple getting pregnant. It takes longer for partners of men older than 40 years to conceive.
There is very limited data about men in extreme old age (80 yr and older). Of older men who produce spermatozoa in their ejaculates, sperm motility, a manifestation of viability and fertilizing capacity, tends to be reduced. The ability of men to impregnate their wives gradually reduces from age 25 onward.
Men typically never stop producing sperm, but there is a measurable decline in sperm quality as a man ages. The World Health Organization (WHO) has a set of benchmarks, known as semen parameters, for healthy sperm, including count, morphology (shape), and motility (movement).
Male fertility generally starts to reduce around age 40 to 45 years when sperm quality decreases. Increasing male age reduces the overall chances of pregnancy and increases time to pregnancy (the number of menstrual cycles it takes to become pregnant) and the risk of miscarriage and fetal death.
Men over age 60 commonly have children. The oldest father to naturally conceive was reported to be a 96-year-old man from India. Fathering a child after age 90 is rare (even for the record books), but it shows that it's possible for older men to impregnate someone.
According to Guinness World Records, the oldest father who had the documentation to prove it was Australian Les Colley, who in 1991 fathered a son with his third wife when he was 92. Here are some other notable men who had their mojos working well into their golden years.
Men's age matters too
We've all heard about men in their 80s and 90s fathering children, but this is rare. A father's age also affects the chance of a couple getting pregnant. It takes longer for partners of men older than 40 years to conceive.
On the other hand, old fathers (≥ 40 years) could increase risks of cardiovascular abnormalities, facial deformities, urogenital abnormalities, and chromosome disorders in their offspring. In general, younger fathers had less effect on birth defects compared with older ones.
Another study of intrauterine artificial insemination found that after six cycles, men who were 35 or under had a fertility rate of 52%, whereas men over the age of 35 had a fertility rate of 25%.
MALE INFERTILITY INCREASES WITH AGE
According to studies, age causes a decline in semen volume and sperm motility—two key factors in male fertility. Men over 35 are about half as fertile as men under 25, and on average it takes men over 40 two years to get their partner pregnant while men under 25 take just 4.5 months.
Can a 100 year old man impregnate a woman?
There's no maximum age that stops a man from being able to have a baby. You can become a father long into your older years, but there are risks.
Similar to motility, morphology appears to decrease with advancing male age. Studies indicate declines in normal sperm morphology of 0.2% to 0.9% per year of age, resulting in a 4% to 18% decrease in normal morphology over a 20-year period.
Erramatti Mangamma currently holds the record for being the oldest living mother who gave birth at the age of 73 through in-vitro fertilisation via caesarean section in the city of Hyderabad, India. She delivered twin baby girls, making her also the oldest mother to give birth to twins.
Male infertility can be caused by low sperm production, abnormal sperm function or blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm. Illnesses, injuries, chronic health problems, lifestyle choices and other factors may contribute to male infertility.
While a 92-year-old woman delivering a 60-year-old baby may sound like a bizarre plot twist from the movie “Benjamin Button,” it's true. Huang Yijun, 92, of southern China, recently delivered a child which she'd been carrying for well over half a century. The baby wasn't alive, however.
As long as he is healthy and has a normal testosterone level, a man can probably produce sperm the rest of his life.
Robert De Niro is getting candid about his parenting responsibilities. The 80-year-old actor, who welcomed his seventh baby, daughter Gia Virginia, in April, his first with girlfriend Tiffany Chen, recently opened up about life with his new little one, telling The Guardian it's "going okay."

Robert De Niro opens up about having a baby at age 80: 'It is what it is. It's OK' Robert De Niro doesn't sugarcoat parenting. “It doesn't get easier,” the octogenarian actor, who recently had his seventh child, told The Guardian on Oct.
Older fathers are more likely, for instance, to have children with birth defects such as cleft lip or a hole in the diaphragm, and the odds increase with each year of paternal age. Some cancers also become more common.
Can you have a healthy baby with an older man?
Research published over the last decade suggests that babies born to older men have an increased risk of arriving prematurely or developing birth defects, certain cancers or neurodevelopmental disorders, though the overall risk is still low.
Most researchers investigating older dads start with those in their 40s. Although some even put 35-year-olds and up in the 'older fathers' category.
“Men's sperm quality seems to deteriorate after the age of 35,” a report published in the peer-reviewed journal, New Scientist, cautions. The scientists also note that at the age of 35, the proportion of sperm carrying an X chromosome also seems to increase, meaning older dads are more likely to have daughters.
Sperm count (semen analysis).
Your provider will check the semen and sperm for many things. These include how much semen you make, how uniform it is, and how acidic it is. He or she will also look at how many sperm you make, how well they move, and what shape they are.
Sperm Quality and Aging
Unlike females, males remain fertile into their 50s, 60s and even 70s. Though assessments of older men's sperm may fall within an acceptable range, we know that sperm quantity and sperm motility, or movement, may decline with age and contribute to age related male infertility.
