What is a routing number? A routing number is a nine-digit code used by financial institutions to identify other financial institutions. When combined with your account number, it allows institutions to locate your individual account.
A MICR code is a nine-digit identification code used to identify banks and branches participating in the Electronic Clearing System (ECS). The digits in groups of three within the code represent specific information about the bank.
Routing numbers are always 9 digits long. Account numbers may be up to 17 digits long. Some banks list the routing number first on the check, while other banks list the account number first, and still more list the routing number, check number, then account number.
The routing number (also referred to as an ABA routing number or routing transit number) is a nine-digit sequence that is used by banks to identify specific financial institutions within the U.S. Think of it like the digital latitude and longitude of the bank, or a physical IP address.

In the US, a bank code (or routing transit number) is a nine-digit number found on a check between the two colons that identifies an American bank. However, the format and information conveyed in a bank code varies by country, so the term “bank code” takes on a more general meaning from an international perspective.
Look at a check. Your account number (usually 10 digits) is specific to your personal account. It's the second set of numbers printed on the bottom of your checks, just to the right of the bank routing number.
Check the number at the bottom of your cheque
This number contains your account's information. The transit number is 5 digits. The institution number is 3 digits. The account number is 7 digits.
What is an example of a bank account number?

The account number is the second series of digits, and it's scrunched between the routing and check numbers. In the same example from above, the 12-digit account number is 012345678912.
You can quickly and easily find your bank's routing number by looking for the nine-digit number in the bottom-left corner of your physical checks. If you don't have any checks, you could also check your bank's online portal or mobile app, as well as any account statements you may have access to.
Fill and submit the BVN enrolment form. The form can be gotten at any FirstBank branch or you can download it here. At the point of submission you will need to provide a valid means of identification, which could be any of the following: International Passport.
Usually, an account number will be 10-12 digits long, but its length could vary from one bank to another. Sometimes, the account number and check number are reversed, so your account number will be found on the right side of the bottom of your check, as opposed to in the middle.
While the routing number identifies the financial institution's name, the account number—usually between eight and 12 digits—identifies your account. If you hold two accounts at the same bank, the routing numbers will, in most cases, be the same, but your account numbers will be different.
Bank account numbers typically consist of eight to 12 digits, but some account numbers could even contain up to 17 digits. You can find your account number on your checks or by accessing your account on your financial institution's website or by contacting the bank directly.
Financial institutions include a broad range of business operations within the financial services sector, including banks, insurance companies, brokerage firms, and investment dealers. Virtually everyone living in a developed economy has an ongoing or at least periodic need for a financial institution's services.
You can usually find these details by logging into your internet bank. From there you should easily be able to see the account number of the account you would like to use, the institution number of the bank and the transit number of the branch.
Financial Institution Name means the name of the bank or financial organization that is to carry out transactions based on the authority granted by the payer. This entity will continue to carry out transactions until they receive a written termination notice of this authority from the payer.

How do I find my financial institution number without a cheque?
Your branch (transit), institution, and account number are located on the bottom of a cheque for the relevant account, as shown below. If you do not have cheques or cannot find the numbers shown, you will need to contact your bank.
Look at the numbers on the bottom of your cheque – they are separated into four sets of numbers. The first set is the cheque number, the second set is your branch transit number, the third set is your institution number, and the fourth set is your account number.

How long is an account number? In the UK, most bank account numbers typically contain eight digits. Some UK banks do have shorter account numbers, but here the number '0' can be added in front to reach eight digits. Generally, a bank account number will only be relevant when used in conjunction with a sort code.
The ACH routing number is like the city or town where you reside, while the account number is similar to the address of your house or apartment. You may have several accounts, but each will have a unique account number. ACH numbers are public knowledge, while your account numbers remain private to you.
