SPY is the first US-listed ETF, created in 1993. Now, it is the largest,4 most traded,5 and most liquid ETF in the world.
Investors can choose from a variety of ETFs that trade globally. BlackRock's iShares is the largest provider of ETFs as calculated by assets under management. Other major ETF providers include Vanguard, State Street, Invesco, and Charles Schwab.
The most popular Nasdaq ETF is the Invesco QQQ Trust. It tracks the Nasdaq-100, an index of the 100 largest non-financial companies on the Nasdaq. As such, it's a tech-heavy ETF, with about half of its holdings in the information technology sector.
This ranking presents the largest providers of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) in the United States as of September 11, 2023, by assets under management (AUM). At that time, BlackRock proved to be the largest ETFs provider, with managed assets amounting to approximately 2.1 trillion U.S. dollars.

How many ETFs should you invest in?
Experts agree that for most personal investors, a portfolio comprising 5 to 10 ETFs is perfect in terms of diversification.
Mutual funds and ETFs may hold stocks, bonds, or commodities. Both can track indexes, but ETFs tend to be more cost-effective and liquid since they trade on exchanges like shares of stock. Mutual funds can offer active management and greater regulatory oversight at a higher cost and only allow transactions once daily.
ETFs tend to be less volatile than individual stocks, meaning your investment won't swing in value as much. The best ETFs have low expense ratios, the fund's cost as a percentage of your investment.
You expose your portfolio to much higher risk with sector ETFs, so you should use them sparingly, but investing 5% to 10% of your total portfolio assets may be appropriate. If you want to be highly conservative, don't use these at all.
