Why do banks hate credit unions?
For decades, bankers have objected to the tax breaks and sponsor subsidies enjoyed by credit unions and not available to banks. Because such challenges haven't slowed down the growth of credit unions, banks continue to look for other reasons to allege unfair competition.
Higher loan rates.
Interest rates for loans from banks tend to be higher than interest rates charged by credit unions. For example, as of March 31, 2023, the national average rate for a 60-month new car loan was 5.38% at credit unions and 6.06% at banks.
Limited accessibility. Credit unions tend to have fewer branches than traditional banks. A credit union may not be close to where you live or work, which could be a problem unless your credit union is part of a shared branch network and/or a large ATM network such as Allpoint or MoneyPass.
Like banks, which are federally insured by the FDIC, credit unions are insured by the NCUA, making them just as safe as banks. The National Credit Union Administration is a US government agency that regulates and supervises credit unions.
Moreover, a credit union has more customer-friendly policies in place for overdrawing your checking account or having a lower credit score, making credit unions much better sources for banking services when you're new to the banking system, or experiencing credit problems.
If the bank fails, you'll get your money back. Nearly all banks are FDIC insured. You can look for the FDIC logo at bank teller windows or on the entrance to your bank branch. Credit unions are insured by the National Credit Union Administration.
Which is Safer, a Bank or a Credit Union? If you are banking at a federally insured institution, whether it is a credit union insured by the NCUA or a bank by the FDIC, your money is equally safe. Credit unions are owned by the members—your savings account at a credit union is a share of ownership.
Experts told us that credit unions do fail, like banks (which are also generally safe), but rarely. And deposits up to $250,000 at federally insured credit unions are guaranteed, just as they are at banks.
Credit unions tend to have lower interest rates for loans and lower fees. Banks often have more branches and ATMs nationwide. Many credit unions have shared branches and surcharge-free ATMs provided through the CO-OP Shared Branch network. Bank have historically had better technology online and for mobile apps.
Federally insured credit unions and banks are both safe places to keep your money. The National Credit Union Administration protects deposits (within certain limits) at insured credit unions and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. protects deposits (within certain limits) at insured banks.
Can a credit union fail like a bank?
It is important to note that credit unions can fail, and have, even prior to the current banking crisis. However, their depositors are made whole from payouts from the NCUA insurance fund.
Bank | Forbes Advisor Rating | Products |
---|---|---|
Chase Bank | 5.0 | Checking, Savings, CDs |
Bank of America | 4.2 | Checking, Savings, CDs |
Wells Fargo Bank | 4.0 | Savings, checking, money market accounts, CDs |
Citi® | 4.0 | Checking, savings, CDs |
A credit union might be the better choice if you value high savings account rates and low fees, plus like the idea of being part of the ownership group. But if you need a bigger menu of banking products and services and want to be near a branch, then you may be better off at a traditional bank.
You'll save more money.
Instead of paying shareholders a portion of the profit generated, credit unions return their profits to their member-owners in the form of better dividends on savings, lower interest rates on loans, interest-earning checking and fewer fees.
Through right of offset, the government allows banks and credit unions to access the savings of their account holders under certain circ*mstances. This is allowed when the consumer misses a debt payment owed to that same financial institution.
Both Wells Fargo and Bank of America can be good choices for low-income earners since the direct deposit minimums are not overly burdensome.
No member of a federally insured credit union has ever lost a penny in insured accounts.
(FDIC) bank failures from 2021 up until the March 10 closure of Silicon Valley Bank. Notably, there were no credit union failures directly following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. “The credit union system remains well-capitalized and on a solid footing,” said NCUA Chairman Todd Harper in a statement on March 13.
Generally, money kept in a bank account is safe—even during a recession. However, depending on factors such as your balance amount and the type of account, your money might not be completely protected. For instance, Silicon Valley Bank likely had billions of dollars in uninsured deposits at the time of its collapse.
Yes. Generally speaking, credit unions are safer than banks in a collapse. This is because credit unions use fewer risks, serving individuals and small businesses rather than large investors, like a bank.
Should I keep my savings in a credit union?
These days, credit unions are safe and secure, having been insured by the government for over 50 years. Credit unions are a popular place for savings accounts because they often offer more favorable interest rates on both loans and savings accounts.
Are Credit Unions FDIC insured by the government? No, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) only insures deposits in banks. Credit unions have their own insurance fund, run by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).
How Revenue Must Shift at $10 Billion. When a credit union reaches $10 billion in assets, the Durbin amendment of the Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act also kicks in. New Filene research finds many small credit unions are excelling despite many challenges.
Navy Federal Credit Union is the largest credit union in the USA, with over $166 billion in total assets.
