As I conclude my first year at the University of North Texas, I can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. This journey has been nothing short of transformative, filled with challenges, triumphs, and invaluable lessons. From navigating new academic terrain to creating meaningful connections, every experience has contributed to my personal and professional growth. As I look back on the past year, I'm reminded of all the great memories and opportunities I have had.šŸ’š To start the Spring 2024 semester, I started a new job! I have been working for the UNT Career Center as a social media assistant for around 5 months now and have had the best time working on posts and campaigns. This job has taught me so much about collaboration and marketing in general and I can't wait for the semesters to come!šŸŽµ I also started volunteering at the UNT radio station. As a journalism minor (with a focus on radio/news communication), I was eager to start getting some real-life experience on the radio! With the help of some amazing mentors at 88.1, I have been learning how to DJ and work with the software they use. (My dad even got to hear me on the air!)šŸŽ‰ šŸ’— I then attended my 2ndUNT Women In Business Banquet, where I was announced as the Fall 2023 Director of Outreach, making this my first officer position in college! I'm so honored to be chosen for this position and can't wait to lead the club with my fellow amazing officers!šŸŽ‚ Since being at UNT, I have made so many great memories with my amazing friends. So, of course, I had to end the semester with them! We hosted a summer birthday party to celebrate all the birthdays we would miss over the break. While I have only known these people for 2 semesters, they have become one of my favorite things about UNT. I am so grateful for them and couldn't imagine the college experience without them.šŸŽ” Finally, I am finishing this semester by starting a position as a special event intern at the City of Corinth. I started this May and have been working and learning for 2 weeks. While this is just the start, I have had so much fun helping wrap up the planning for the grand opening of Agora! Join us at the brand new Agora Park on June 1stfrom 3ā€“9 pm to enjoy food trucks, hot air balloon rides, carnival rides, vendors, live music, and much more! (shameless plug)

Thereā€™s money to be had out there. A simple process of completing the application and getting a recommendation is all you need. Probably an hour of your time, but well worth it! After all how often can you make $500 an hour šŸ˜‰. #freemoney #scholarships #itsyourfuture

In 2005, The Contingent took action to launch the Act Six scholarship to send underrepresented students to private colleges and universities. In 2015, The Contingent took action to launch Emerging Leaders Internshipā€”which is Oregonā€™s largest internship for college students of color. In 2020, The Contingent took action to launch The Oregon Cares Fund to provide cash grants to Oregonā€™s Black community, which was disproportionally impacted by COVID-19 In 2021, The Contingent took action to launch SINE (Survival is Not Enough) to close the wealth gap in Oregon. In August 2023, The Contingent will take action again, and we will be announcing another major investment to ensure the leaders of Oregon reflect the people who live here. We respect the rules of our democracy, but we will not stop taking action to ensure communities of color experience increased social mobility. Oregonā€™s higher education ecosystem is a critical delivery system to getting that done. Now is not a time to waver or fear. Now is a time for action.

After 8 years of volunteer service with Sushil Raja as a Mentor, Cohort Leader, and Program Director, Iā€™m thrilled to join the Board of Directors of Minds Matter NYC.Iā€™m excited to continue to amplify a mission thatā€™s close to my heart: closing the educational equity gap by empowering under resourced, high-achieving high school students get into college, graduate, and build a successful career.Who does Minds Matter support? The average family income for a student accepted to Minds Matter is $35K, 95% of students identify as BIPOC, and 99% are the first in their family to go to college. What outcomes does it drive?100% of Minds Matter students are accepted to a 4-year college or university, 45% attend highly competitive colleges (like Brown, Georgetown, Cornell, and MIT), and 90% graduate from college within 4 years. In my new role, Iā€™m focused on bringing more resources to the organization so that it can grow to support more students. If Minds Matterā€™s mission resonates with you, letā€™s talk about how you or your employer can contribute.1 - Your time: Depending on your interests and skillset, there are different ways to directly work with students. Volunteering with Minds Matter has been one of the most fulfilling things Iā€™ve done in my life.2 - Your money: Donations enable the organization to provide resources to each student such as: SAT prep and essay writing support, summer programs on college campuses, and stipends for college expenses.3 - Your companyā€™s time and money: Companies can support a worthy cause and advance their own D&I initiatives - through sponsorships and partnerships to create internship and job opportunities for Minds Matterā€™s incredible pool of talented students.

When asked to reflect on her 21 years (and counting!) at Every Texan, Administration Manager Val Davidson has the following to say: "In the 21 years Iā€™ve worked at Every Texan, Iā€™ve had an inside look at the strides made to improve education and equity in our state. As a native Texan and a dedicated member of the Every Texan team, this progress fills me with great pride. Of the many Every Texan contributions to a better Texas, I am especially proud of our internship program. It is a transformational, hands-on educational experience that cultivates emerging advocates and policy experts ā€” many of whom are aspiring educators themselves. We see incredibly bright and passionate individuals come through this program every year. As they complete their internships, these rising stars carry their new expertise into roles that drive positive change in Texas and beyond. But, thereā€™s one thing our interns and other learners should never have to carry: the inequities that come with accessing education of all forms. That is why Every Texan persistently advocates for policies and programs that improve access and equity in education. Our Peopleā€™s Budget will do just that. Through people-centered, fact-based research and policy analysis, a coalition of partners across race, class, and gender, deep community engagement with everyday Texans, and a narrative shift supported by digital advocacy, we know we can impact change where it matters ā€” in public policy. This year, as you gather with family and friends ā€” perhaps playing a board game or two ā€” I challenge you to think about the power in our collective action. If every Texan works together, building an equitable education system (or maybe even carrying an elephant!) is possible. With your support today, we can work together to make the big, bold changes we need to make Texas the best place to learn and live for every Texan: https://lnkd.in/gQgdaa49"
